The 1969 San Francisco mint Lincoln cent is one of the most asked about coins when it comes to doubled dies. The 1969-S Doubled die obverse cent is one of the most sought after doubled dies by collectors. Uncirculated examples have been sold for close to $60,000.00. 1969 was also a banner year for machine/mechanical damage (MD) on the date and mint mark. Learning to tell the difference between the flat, shelf-like secondary image of the MD cents and a true doubled die can be easy once you learn what to look for.
With a total mintage of 544,375,000 coins dated 1969 with the S mint mark, no one can be sure how many of them are the doubled die variety.
Mechanical doubling can appear on date only, as shown in the example below.

Mechanical doubling can also appear along with the doubling on a true doubled die.
